Where To Satisfy Your Waffle Craving

Zinneken’s Waffles Goes Well With a Cup of Coffee

There are three things that I identify with the country of Belgium—Justine Henin, the French language, and waffles. The latter is what I happen to be an expert on. Zinneken’s sits in the heart of Harvard Square and has become a staple among the plethora of comfort food-based eateries surrounding the college town’s vicinity.

Zinnekin’s gives you a choice between two very different waffles that are priced at a reasonable $4.50: the Liège waffle, which has a soft and chewy texture, and the Brussels waffle, which is more crunchy and flaky. You also have a choice of adding toppings like whipped cream, nutella, fruits, and Belgian chocolate. The combination of toppings can add an extra $1 to $4 to the price of a waffle. I recommend pairing your sweet confection with their delicious selection of espresso or hot chocolate. The warm beverage will be the smooth finish to your waffle wonderland.
The only downside to this hidden gem is the small dining area. With only a few tables and some bar-style window seatings, you may be out of luck for a sit-in eating experience. Also, there is no waitstaff. You order at the register and the food is delivered to your seat, if you’re lucky to find one. The best course of action is to plan your visit when business is slow or be prepared to take your waffle to go.
In case Harvard Square is too long of a trip, McKenna’s, right off the Savin Hill T stop is known for their delicious, buttery waffles. For under $6 you get two Belgian waffles hot off the press. You can add fruits and whipped cream and leave with a full tummy and some extra dollars in your pocket. As all good brunch places, the wait can be long and anxious, but if you come between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. during the weekday, you may find yourself the sole diner.
But who are we kidding? Good food is worth the wait. So, treat yourself or be average!
