LATE UMASS BOSTON GOAL EDGES CORSAIR MEN’S LACROSSE TEAM, 8-7

Bobby Cusack scored his third goal of the game with 2:44 remaining to give UMass Boston an 8-7 victory over the UMass Dartmouth men’s lacrosse team in a Little East Conference game at Cressy Field Tuesday afternoon.

Cusack cut in front of the net and deflected a shot from Robert Thayer past UMass Dartmouth senior goalkeeper Craig Britton to put the Beacons ahead, 8-7, with 2:44. UMass Boston held off a late flurry by the Corsairs to preserve their victory.

The Corsairs fell to 3-4 and 0-2 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while the UMass Boston improved to 3-1 and 1-0 in LEC play with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Nichols in a non-conference game Saturday, while UMass Boston will host Salve Regina Thursday afternoon.

UMASS BOSTON DOWNS SALEM STATE, 9-2

Freshman Mike Adriano pitched six solid innings allowing one run and one hit as the UMass Boston Beacons defeated the Salem State Vikings, 9-2.

Adriano picked up his third win of the season by striking out four and walking only three. UMass Boston (9-5) scored twice in the first on an RBI single by senior Bryan Curran, who, later scored on a double hit by sophomore Tom Michael. Salem State (8-9) cut into the lead in the bottom half of the inning as freshman Devon Davis reached on an error by the shortstop and later scored on a double from junior Ken Luongo. The Beacons scored five runs in the next two innings using the long ball to increase their lead to 7-1. Junior Mike Dorval hit a solo homerun in the second inning and Curran belted a two-run shot during a four-run third inning. Senior Erik Willett started the game for the Vikings allowing four earned runs and six hits in three innings pitched. Junior Matt Mello went 1-for-2 and scored a run in the seventh inning on a base hit by junior Ryan Laffin.
