On March 7, the Queer Student Center (QSC) and the Women’s Center jointly held a gathering to address the body issues faced by women. As described by QSC coordinator Stephanie Bonvissuto, the format of the meeting was meant to raise consciousness by “hearing truth and speaking truth in a safe environment, and [raising] awareness of issues that affect us every day.”
During the event, women had the opportunity to discuss their concerns with body image. Some students talked about not fitting into stereotypical gender roles, as well as criticism from family, peers and the media. Others discussed self-esteem issues, depression, and other problems they felt were associated with issues of self-image.
“It was brutally honest. It was about being vulnerable in a safe space,” one participant stated. She added, “I liked the format. It helps to speak [out] about the uneasiness of my body, [rather than] keep it in.”
One woman described the body-altering aftermath of a surgery. In the recovery period, due to the immobility imposed by bed rest for half a year, she gained enough weight to become obese. Now, after having lost the weight, she is stilling dealing with the resultant stretch marks.
Another student also spoke about problems with pain and discomfort from an injury she incurred. She has had to cope with her frustration with her body shape, as well as being interracial. She said she’s growing to love her body.
According to Bonvissuto, the forum will convene again next month, including a presentation from counselors addressing “how we deal with stress.”
