Although the Beacons captured their first win of the year against Newbury College, they couldn’t sustain the momentum, losing to Plymouth State College 4-1. Plymouth State dropped the Beacons to 1-6 and 0-1 in the Little East Conference.
UMass got off to a fast start. Freshman Chris Havak scored a little over five minutes into the match. He drilled a loose ball from just outside the goalkeeper’s box to give the Beacons an early advantage. The goal seemed to energize the entire team, at least for a little while.
Plymouth State took over from there. They tallied three consecutives goals to take a 3-1 at halftime. Although the Beacons had some opportunities to score, they were unable to capitalize on any of them. Sophomore goalkeeper Chris DeJoseph played a good game, registering eight saves. Plymouth State scored the last goal of the game when PSC’s Michael Cantelli fired a bullet into the net after a scramble out in front of the goal.
