Guster
Although the individual members hail from other states, Guster as a band was born out of Boston, Tufts University, to be exact. Ryan Miller, Brian Rosenworcel, and Adam Gardner met as freshman in 1991. After talking about their own high school bands, they decided to form their band: Gus. In 1993 they recorded their first demo in Boston. The following year they hooked up with producer Mike Denneen and recorded their first album, “Parachute.” In 1995, another, more highly represented, artist called himself Gus, and begrudgingly, Ryan, Brian, and Adam became Guster. I think it worked out for the best.
Guster has had a huge cult following for many years, and they are now just starting to really break into the nationwide rock scene. These guys are some of the most talented musicians, singers, and songwriters to grace the music industry, and I can only hope that larger scale fame (and its coming) won’t spoil Guster’s down to earth personality, or their respect for really good, organic music.
Guster put on an amazing performance at The Opera House, April 20 and 21. They will be back in Boston headlining the WBOS Earth Fest, May 26 at the Hatch Shell.
Mat Kearney
Also performing at the Earth Fest will be Mat Kearney. Born in Oregon in 1978, Kearney is now based out of Nashville. His music is acoustic with some traces of hip-hop. Kearney plays guitar, piano and the harmonica. His first album, “Bullet,” was released in 2004. His second album, and first major label release, was “Nothing Left to Lose,” which reached 118 on the Billboard Charts, 2006.
KT Tunstall
Kate “KT” Tunstall hails from St. Andrews, Scotland. The Grammy nominated 32 year old spent her early years playing in bands and focusing on songwriting. Her first album, “Eye to the Telescope,” was released in 2004, and entered the UK charts at 73. In 2005 she performed her single, “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” on the BBC’s “Later With Jool Holland.” She blew audiences, and the other acts, away. “Eye to the Telescope” was re-released in the UK, and released in the US in 2006, and debuted at 3 on the UK charts. Her second single, “Suddenly I See” was featured in the movie “The Devil Wears Prada.” Tunstall’s second album, “Drastic Fantastic,” is completed and should be out sometime this year.
So show your support for these cool bands and give it up for Mama Gaia. Ya heard?
