Golfing senator is not amused

I noticed that there was an article about the best places for “Hanky Panky” on the UMB campus. I was amused that there was a potentially scandalous story in our student newspaper.

The article opened by asking the reader if they had ever noticed a shortage of private areas for “intimate endeavors” for students on campus. To be honest, the thought never crossed my mind. I think I speak for most of the students when I say that I don’t come to school trying to find a location for an intimate endeavor.

I couldn’t quite believe what I was reading. It was not so much the content that surprised me but where I was reading it. The student newspaper was the last place I expected to find smut like this and I was appalled that it was allowed to be printed. What if a potential student and his or her family had been scouting the campus and came across that article? I think they certainly would have a hard time taking this university seriously.

I have no problem with racy material, but the place for it is not the Mass Media. When I think of UMass Boston I like to think of the amazing research going on in its labs or the strides that its student body is making to better the community. The last thing I want to think about is a couple of students having sex in the library where I am trying to study!

It’s a shame that our student newspaper has stooped so low. I’d like to think that there is more going on in our university than “Hanky Panky”. The space in the student newspaper should be left for news stories, not porn.

Waste of money?

This is the most ridiculous waste of my ten dollars a semester. The editors and advisors have to be kidding running this story. The past 2 editions have been bad enough with mention of other sexual activities but when did UMass Boston become the Playboy Mansion? I thought we strive to be a credible institution of learning. This story negates any and all of that credibility.

Tasteless and offensive

I find this article absolutely tasteless and offensive. I read someone’s Letter to the Editor claiming that the last issue’s Fall Fashion piece was bringing down the credibility of the paper; I can’t wait to see what the person has to say about this piece. This is tasteless and offensive, not to mention that sex in public is illegal. I hope the editors are taking care of this and won’t print anything like this again. It’s bad enough that in the UMBe Mine section the writer is talking about blow jobs in the Red Lobster parking lot, but this takes it to a whole new level. The Herald and Globe do not write about such issues as sex in public, and they are credible. Mass Media needs to focus less on the shock value and more on what students want to hear about (ie-tuition, books, campus happenings, student affairs, fashion, music, etc.)

Relax, it’s just humor

People need to relax. Humor belongs both in print and on college campuses. Remember, it’s a college paper, not the New York Times. (Although I wouldn’t mind researching with Judith Miller.)

Judge the whole issue

I agree it is important that students be aware of the issues that union employees face as their contracts come up for renewal, as it is an issue that effects the entire….

…Oh, wait, you’re all talking about the tiny sex article.

I just assumed that some people would be amused by it and others would have just ignored it as they gravitated their attention to the more substantive articles. Judging by the fact that this is the #1 most-read story, I suppose it just proves how riveting this stuff is to everybody.

In the mean time, I’ll be holding my breath to see how many students show equal enthusiasm by leaving comments in the articles on union worker’s contracts, or student heath insurance, or the UMass Board of Trustees.
