Well folks, it’s finally here. The end of the semester is upon us. The stress of classes, homework and finals will soon be over.

So, what are you going to do with all that free time you’ll suddenly have on your hands? I’ll tell you what, you’re gonna watch movies! Or not. I mean I don’t care; it really makes no difference to me. Either way, I now present you with a guide of the biggest holiday movies coming to a theater near you.

Alvin and the Chipmunks – Dec. 14This movie is dripping with nostalgic value. There aren’t many Americans who grew up between the 50’s and 80’s who haven’t had the chipmunks in their lives in one way or another. As such it is the most likely movie on the list to inadvertently uncover a repressed memory.

Jason Lee plays Dave Seville, a man who discovers three singing chipmunks and-naturally-decides to exploit them for financial gain.

In this iteration our chipmunk pals are apparently badass MCs, and their soundtrack is further proof with tracks such as; “How We Roll,” “Ain’t No Party,” and “Get you Goin’.” Honestly, those are the names of actual tracks.

I Am Legend – Dec. 14

Alvin will have some serious competition for your movie going dollar as he goes up against Will Smith’s action packed “I Am Legend.” The film, based off of a 1954 novel by Richard Matheson, follows Smith as he struggles to live in a post-apocalyptic New York City.

Smith’s character, Robert Neville, appears to be the last human survivor of a man-made virus that turns people into badass CGI mutants. The trailers and TV spots are vague on the details, but it appears Smith’s only costar is a German Shepard (who I am certain will die in a heart-wrenching scene), which means there will be no one to distract from Smith’s immense stardom. Finally! In your face Alfonso Ribeiro.

The Kite Runner – Dec. 14

Dec. 14 is going to be a crowded weekend for adaptations. “The Kite Runner” is the big screen version of Afghan American author Khaled Hosseini’s 2005 bestseller.

I don’t know much about this movie, but I’ve seen people reading the book all over airports and on trains, so it must be good. Also, I’m pretty sure the kite is a metaphor for something, and that usually translates into great storytelling.

This film is likely to give “Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium” some serious Oscar competition.

Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street – Dec. 21

This film is, you guessed it, yet another adaptation. This time Tim Burton takes a crack at Stephen Sondheim’s 1970’s musical of the same name.

Johnny Depp stars as the titular hero, a falsely imprisoned barber who escapes a life sentence to exact revenge on the man who put him behind bars. In his quest for vengeance, Sweeny Todd ends up taking out a few innocent Londoners along the way. Meanwhile his partner-in-crime, played by Helena Bonham Carter, grinds up the victims into delicious meat pies.

I must say, Bonham Carter has that sort of, stick-your-hand-on-a-hot-plate kind of appeal. She’s scary, and she’ll probably hurt you, but you still want to touch her.

Persepolis – Dec. 25This animated film, based on the best-selling autobiographical graphic novel by Marjane Starapi, is a coming of age story set against the background of 1970’s Iran. It is a time of civil unrest and religious upheaval.

As things change around her Marjane grows from a girl to a young woman, and her family must face the difficult decision of whether to stay in the country they call home, or flee and start a new life in a foreign land.
