The Fifty-Ninth Annual Grammy Awards show was held on Feb. 12, 2017. The awards show took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. It was hosted by James Corden, who hosts CBS’s “The Late, Late Show.”
The Grammys had a total of 84 award categories, and included live performances by Adele, Beyonce, The Weeknd, Ed Sheeran, Chance the Rapper, Demi Lovato, Andra Day, Tori Kelly, Alicia Keys, Bruno Mars, and Katy Perry. Other performances included Lady Gaga and Metallica, tributes to Prince, George Michael, and Malik Taylor a.k.a. Phife Dawg.
The big winners included Adele, who walked away with five awards for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album. Chance The Rapper, another big winner, made Grammy history and walked away with three awards; the awards were Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Album. He made Grammy history by winning the Grammy for best rap album for “Coloring Book,” which is the first time the award has been given to a streamed-only album. This is the result of a Grammy rule change that was announced last year, which permitted stream-only recordings to be eligible for nominations.
Memorable moments included when a very pregnant Beyonce, who walked away with two awards for Best Music Video and Best Urban Contemporary Album, graced the Grammy stage to perform Love Drought and Sandcastles from her latest album, “Lemonade.”
Another memorable moment was when Adele gave a tribute to the Queen Bey. Adele’s album “25” won Album of the Year over Beyonce’s “Lemonade,” and she thought Beyonce’s album deserved the award over hers.
In her acceptance speech, she stated, “I can’t possibly accept this award, and I’m very humbled and very grateful and gracious but my life is Beyonce, and the album to me, the “Lemonade” album, Beyonce, was so monumental… All of us artists f–king adore you… The way that you make me and my friends feel, the way you make my black friends feel is empowering… And I love you. I always have. And I always will.”
