Every month, we thought it would be fun to go back in musical time and see what the biggest song was in 1966, the year UMass was established as a University. The sixties, as many people know, was a treasure trove of music that included everything from pure country (thank you Professor Rubin), The British invasion and of course, “The Motown Sound”- the musical phenomenon crated by Berry Gordy Jr. and the musical hit dream team producers and writers Lamont Dosier and Brian Holland. On this day in 1966, The Supremes’ “You Can’t Hurry Love” permeated the airways. There were many girl bands of the sixties, but the Supremes, fronted by Dianna Ross with Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard and Betty McGlown, was the most commercial and popular band of Motown. Their songs were heartfelt, catchy, very danceable, very irresistible, and just plain fun.
