The COVID-19 pandemic caused a large wave of individuals to become less active and eat less healthier foods. I feel as though I have gained weight throughout quarantine, which is okay! However, I have been looking to take control of my eating to help me feel more energized and healthy. Eating healthier on a student budget may seem like a difficult thing to do. However, there are definitely simple ways for even us students to develop a healthier lifestyle.
One of my biggest tips is to try to lessen the junk food that’s at your disposal. If it is hard for you to outright drop your favorite junk foods, start by slowly lessening the amount you are taking in. I stress-eat and boredom-eat a lot. If you are like me, try to snack on healthier alternatives of your favorite snacks. There are many diet versions of products out there that are still as tasty as the originals. The possible adjustments in sodium, calories, and trans fat can make a huge difference. Finding healthier alternatives is a great way for you to still be able to snack when you want and not feel as guilty.
Furthermore, I highly recommend finding cooking inspiration. Maybe follow healthy food blogs or even invest in an inexpensive healthy cookbook. I have a cookbook that has healthier recipes under $10. It is perfect for when I am wanting satisfying food I can feel good about, without breaking the bank. Many people stay away from healthy eating, with the misconception that healthy food is always expensive. There are some products on the market that are up-charged for their health benefits. However, that is not the case for all health foods. Also, making your own food can actually be less expensive than what people may believe. Once you find the right recipes for you, you will be spending less money cooking your own meal versus buying a pre-made ‘healthy’ one at the store or at your local restaurant.
Moreover, another important factor in a healthier lifestyle is something as simple as hydrating yourself. It is one of the most basic tips, but many people actually fail to intake the daily recommended amount of water. Many people are dehydrated and may not even realize it. If you think you have drank enough water, drink some more. Hydrating your body will allow it to flush out toxins, regulate your body temperature, prevent infections, etc. Being better hydrated can also improve your sleep and mood. Water is so important. Drinking more can make a huge difference in your health, not only on the outside but also on the inside as well.
Developing a healthier lifestyle during the pandemic may seem difficult, but with motivation and the right tips, it is not impossible! Cutting junk food out of your pantry and finding healthier alternatives is a great way for you to still enjoy your favorites, but feel less guilty about them. Moreover, finding healthier recipes for you to cook can help cut down costs and still provide satisfying food that you will enjoy. Also, hydrating your body and cutting out more processed liquids such as soda and juice can be beneficial, especially in your journey to a healthier lifestyle. Even as students, we can still eat healthier and be happy while doing it.
