On Nov. 12, Billie Eilish released a single titled “Therefore I Am.” This single sounds a lot like past songs she has released—pop with heavy percussion elements and a smooth beat. The title of the song is inspired by Descartes’s famous line, “Cognito, ergo sum,” meaning “I think, therefore I am.” Like in many of her songs, Eilish uses her breathy and light voice, never giving too much attention to a single note, but instead dancing on them with abandon. In parts of the song, you can hear Eilish herself singing background in high vocals. The song altogether is nothing particularly new from Eilish, and those who have disliked her style in the past will not change their minds for this new track.
“Therefore I Am” is an aggressive song, in which Eilish speaks sourly to someone she dislikes, expressing repeatedly that they are not friends. In parts of the song, Eilish talks instead of speaking. One instance is in the beginning, where she says, “Stop, what the hell are you talking about? Ha / Get my pretty name out of your mouth / We are not the same with or without / Don’t talk ’bout me like how you might know how I feel… ” It is impossible to say who Eilish intends to address with these lyrics, but it could be interpreted that she is addressing people that know of her but do not understand her on a personal level. Dealing with fame, Eilish likely feels vulnerable to those who observe and insult her from the safety of anonymity. For all her time in the spotlight, Eilish has dealt with endless judgement on everything she does, the clothes she wears, the way she speaks, and how she presents herself to the world. Eilish has had more of her fair share of hate, and now she feels tired and angry at those who judge her without knowing her.
“Therefore I Am” follows multiple singles that have been released since her 2019 album “WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?”, including singles “my future,” “No Time To Die,” and “everything i wanted.” The last three of Eilish’s singles and “Therefore I Am” have related to themes of death and life. “everything i wanted” includes a dream about suicide, “my future” expresses Eilish’s longing for her future life, and “No Time To Die” includes lyrics portraying that Eilish has a lot of living left to do. The title “Therefore I Am” alone reminds listeners of Descartes which leads them to meditate on the meaning of their own existence. It seems that Eilish is spending her 2020 ruminating on her life and what it means to live at all. For now, the big question on the minds of Billie fans is this: are these singles the sign of a new album on the horizon? So far, there is no news on that front. However, Eilish, like the rest of us, has probably had lots of free time in quarantine, so we remain hopeful. It is important that Eilish strays from her comfort zone as she releases new music, in order to avoid falling into the trap of producing the same song over and over again. We have heard percussion-heavy pop, dark lyrics, and recognizable vocals from Eilish for many songs. It’s time to switch it up.
