The Wombats are looking to continue the rich tradition of pop music from Liverpool, England. Liverpool was given the honor of being named the “World Capital City of Pop” by The Guinness World Record Book in 2001. The fact that the area is home to multiple artists who have produced over 50 number one records is a good reason for the prestigious title. Liverpool’s heyday was of course in the 60’s during the British Invasion, but The Wombats are still producing solid pop records out of the same area over 40 years later.
Their latest effort, The Wombats proudly present This Modern Glitch, is full of pop rhythms that pay tribute to the history of England. The Wombats offer a healthy dose of synth that is balanced by the throbbing drum beats and deep baselines. Another pop staple that is used in almost every song that I’ve heard by The Wombats is the harmonizing of the backup vocalists.
The first single from the new album exemplify their style. “Tokyo (Vampires and Wolves)” starts with catchy synth and has the backdrop of drums and bass burst in. The lead vocals are a little jarring at first but after a while you’ll get used to them and maybe even start to enjoy them. Nasally, slightly high-pitched vocals aside the lyrics are decent. This pop band seems to have something to say without being overtly preachy; the lyrics also seem very genuine which is refreshing.
The Wombats are at their best when they are doing fast paced, guitar driven songs. The tracks (for the most part) are made for good times. If you’re into the pop-rock genre I’d recommend you take a look at these young men from Liverpool, The Wombats. The Wombats proudly present This Modern Glitch is available on most major online distributors.
