Dear Jack and Jade,
What do you think about girls asking out guys? I have a thing for someone in my psychology class and don’t want to just hope that he’ll ask me out. How should I ask? Do you think it would be weird?
Sincerely,
Confused
Dear Confused,
Thank you for your question. It has been hotly debated whether it is okay for girls to ask out guys. Normally it is the other way around! There is nothing wrong with girls asking guys out! In our society, however, we are taught guys are the ones who should ask girls out. A part of this thinking might stem from the fact that, traditionally, men were considered the head of the household and the breadwinner. Today, this is not always the case. Things are shifting, so why isn’t it okay for girls to ask guys out?
Some people believe when girls asks guys out, it kind of emasculates the guy. Some people also believe that girls who ask guys out are “pushy,” but who decided that this should be the norm? Other people think a girl should be able to ask a guy out as it takes the stress off of the guy to do so, they think more girls should.
Our society, however, doesn’t encourages this as it is saying to guys “be the man” and “what is wrong with you?” if a guy allows a girl to ask him out. Our society is very sexist. Some things are okay for men to do while it isn’t the case for women! If you decide you are interested in a person and feel compelled to ask them out, do it!
While I have never asked a guy out and am probably too afraid to, do not let me or anyone stop you from doing this if you feel compelled to. You never know what might happen and sometimes, guys are waiting for girls to show interest. Sometimes guys need a little push and are unsure of how you feel. You may also take the pressure off of the guy by asking! Do not be afraid to defy societal norms and ask that guy!
Good luck!
Jade
Dear Jack,
My best friend is having an existential crisis. How do I know that my best friend even exists?
Sincerely,
Metaphysically Mindf*cked
Dear Metaphysically Mindf*cked,
An existential crisis, in my opinion, does not have to do with one’s status of existence, but rather, one’s manner of existence. Your friend most likely exists, but you might want to consult your own internal world and mental state to figure out that one. You might even find yourself having an existential crisis of your own! But I would recommend talking to your best friend about the value they place on their own life and why or why not they are dissatisfied, as well as asking yourself similar questions. Good luck and stay real!
Best,
Jack
Dear Jack and Jade,
My roommate has been doing a lot of things that get on my nerves lately. She’s really noisy in the mornings, and she usually gets up before me, so I always wake up because of her. She can be kind of noisy at night too, even if she’s just in the living room watching TV and I’m trying to go to sleep. I’m afraid of us getting into a fight if I try to talk to her about it. How do you think I should approach her?
Annoyed roommate
Dear Annoyed roommate,
Having roommates can be both rewarding and challenging. Living with another person isn’t always easy. If you are uncomfortable with your situation, you should definitely say something to your roommate. I would encourage you to approach her regarding this as gently as you can. Do not try to anger her by shouting or being insulting; however, let her know that she’s a bit noisy and that it is affecting you. Also, watch how it comes across to her. There’s a saying that says, “It’s not what you say, but how you say it.” Ask her if she could do something differently as it is irritating and you need to be comfortable wherever you live despite who you are living with. I hope you and your roommate can figure things out and work this out peacefully.
Best,
Jade
