On Thursday, Feb. 18, an Emergency Alert went out to all students and faculty of the University of Massachusetts Amherst warning that there were two gunmen on campus.
The university instructed all students and faculty to stay inside. There were many tweets and Facebook statuses from staff and students warning friends. UMass sent out an official tweet at 6:10 p.m. saying:
“ALERT: Hostile armed person reported in Pierpont Hall. UMPD on scene and perimeter secured Please shelter in place.”
It was reported that there were no shots fired. Unfortunately, a male student was assaulted; he suffered a laceration to the head and was treated at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton. The assault is not believed to be a random act, according to UMass Police, and it is an on going investigation.
