With an innocent look that belongs on Disney, sibling duo Jocelyn and Chris Arndt deliver “Edges,” a raw and hard-hitting project packed with a powerful range of vocals, emotional intensity, and a fusion of blues-y retro and alternative rock carrying heavy chords and searing solos.
Hailing from upstate New York, Jocelyn and Chris are heavily dedicated to their music. However, it seems music is not their only strong suit. The siblings make time to create music and perform around the country all while attending Harvard University.
“Edges” is a product of effectively mixed and balanced sounds. With 12 tracks on the album, Jocelyn and Chris successfully showcase their wide range of talents by reaching out to genres of ‘80s rock, blues, and even jazz, blending it all together to create their own sound.
The album kicks off with the single “Shame,” a solid track that gradually builds and sets the stage for the rest of the full-length effort. The second track, “Too Much to Me,” is where Jocelyn truly showcases her vocal range by belting out incredibly, resembling the likes of Janis Joplin and Alison Mosshart of The Dead Weather. Chris’ smooth blues-y chords carry a similar style to Jack White.
While the duo has cranked out fast-paced and “true-to-the-bone” rock songs with high intensity like “Hot” and “Cinderella,” tracks like “More than I Say I Do” and “Cut the Cord” show the band’s softer side; with sweet vocals and prominent emotions, Jocelyn is accompanied by a soft piano. They are not afraid to get a little funky, either. With a smooth bass line as the opener, the duo adds flavor to the album with “Jagged.”
The versatility of their sound is the most impressive characteristic. “Because of You” starts with soft keys and ethereal vocals from Jocelyn, which is then amplified by the entrance of psychedelic chords and a Santana-esque solo from Chris.
Life is pumped into the track with the help of fast-paced drumming, adding a sprinkle of funk to their discography.
This album has a myriad of sounds scattered throughout. Though stylistically, the album ranges from blues to retro rock to jazz to funk, it remains consistent at the core: the foundation that Chris lays with his impressive chords and sharp solos pull Jocelyn’s devastatingly incredible vocal range, never failing to convey pure emotion.
The Arndt siblings are musicians who effortlessly combine their ‘80s and ‘90s musical influences and successfully create a sound they can claim as theirs.
A band that goes back in time, bringing the revival of rock back into modern times, is definitely something that should be on your radar Things can only get better for them from here.
“Edges” is set to drop on March 7.
