Adam Doneger scored his fifth goal of the game 1:19 into overtime lifting No. 1 Johns Hopkins to a 13-12 victory over the University of Massachusetts in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament at Homewood Field. The Minutemen complete their season with a 12-4 overall record.

Junior midfielders Kevin Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) and Chris Fiore (Freeport, N.Y.) each scored a goal in the final 25 seconds of regulation to send the game into overtime. Fiore finished the game with four goals and an assist, while Leveille had three goals.

Trailing 8-2 at halftime, the Minutemen scored eight consecutive goals in the second half to take a 10-8 lead at the 13:04 mark of the fourth quarter. Fiore and senior Don Little (Clifton Park, N.Y.) each had a pair of goals in the third quarter. Little’s second goal cut the Blue Jays lead to 8-6 at the 8:12 mark. Sophomore Jeff Zywicki (Nepean, Ontario) scored his first of the game at the 2:52 mark to bring the Minutemen within one heading into the final quarter.

Just 26 seconds into the fourth quarter, Zywicki re corded an unassisted goal, his second of the day, tying the game at eight. Little then completed his hat trick 12 seconds later giving the Minutemen their first lead of the game. Less than two minutes later, Leveille scored his second goal of the game off a feed from Fiore to put Massachusetts up 10-8. After Zywicki had a goal taken away due to a crease violation, Kyle Barrie scored his third goal of the game to bring the Blue Jays back within a goal. Johns Hopkins then scored three more goals in less than two minutes to take a 12-10 lead at the 4:08 mark.

An errant pass by the Blue Jays in the Massachusetts zone gave the Minutemen the ball back with 55 seconds. The Minutemen then moved the ball downfield and worked it around the net, where Leveille was able to put a shot past Hopkins goaltender Nick Murtha and cut the lead to a goal with 25 seconds left. On the ensuing faceoff, the Minutemen scooped up the ground ball deep in the Hopkins zone and after a timeout, Fiore broke free and beat Murtha with 12 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

Johns Hopkins won the faceoff starting the extra session and Doneger beat Massachusetts freshman netminder Bill Schell (Mahopac, N.Y.) with a goal at the 2:41 mark to send the Blue Jays into the Final Four.

Johns Hopkins scored the first six goals of the first half to build a 6-0 lead at the 7:46 mark of the second quarter. Fiore got the Minutemen on the board at the 6:32 mark of the second quarter. After Leveille brought the Minutemen within four at the 1:06 mark, Hopkins scored a pair of goals in the final 20 seconds to take an 8-2 lead at halftime. Kyle Barrie and Doneger each had a pair of goals in the first half.

Massachusetts did not record a goal in the first quarter, marking just the third time this season that they have not scored in a quarter. The most recent was in the second quarter of the 10-3 win over Vermont on March 13. Schell made four saves in net for Massachusetts, while Murtha made 18 for Johns Hopkins. Masasachusetts outshot Johns Hopkins 47-27 in the game. Senior Marc Morley (Canton, N.Y.) finished the day with two assists for the Minutemen.

The Minutemen conclude their season with a 12-4 overall record, while Johns Hopkins advances to next weekend’s semifinal game against Princeton.
