For the almost 3 years that I have been student of UMB, I have never read such a great investigative report as the one written by Jesse Solomon about the unsanitary conditions of the Fitness Center. Mr. Solomon addresses serious life-threatening concerns relevant to all UMB occupants, students, faculty, staff, and our various guests. Yes, I have fallen unpredictable to elevators being stuck in between floors, inability to drink because of low-pressure water fountains, slipped in one of the many potholes in our parking garages, and sickened by the bathroom odors. What would happen if the elevator suddenly drops? How do I know the elevator operating licenses are genuine? And what would happen if I really became sick because of the bathroom odors? And finally what would happen if the unsanitary conditions at Fitness Center fostered a disease-spreading environment? Mr. Solomon brings to mind an important point: is the university in violation of federal (or state) guidelines? I hope that the University reacts positively, and institute life-saving–not life-threatening–changes.
