I am writing in response to last semester’s article, “Pinup or Pornography?” about flyers made by staff members of The Watermark. I for one am absolutely appalled by The Watermark’s depiction of women as independent sexual beings. In the 1940s and 50s when these models posed for the paintings, it was completely inappropriate for women to be seen doing anything but cooking, vacuuming, and ironing. Implying that women could be so defiant as to bear some skin and show some curves in an era when sexual repression was the societal norm offends me. I commend the Women’s Center for pointing out this wrong and for supporting other defenseless women who did not have the courage to speak out against this total disregard for what is becoming or ladylike. In today’s world where women are obsessed with equality and human rights I reminisce of simpler times when women were respectfully clothed, knew their place (in the kitchen), and were satisfied.
