Freshman catcher Jeran Mondalto (Amesbury, MA) matched a school-record with five hits and knocked in three runs to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston baseball team over Emerson College today, 19-3. The game was played at adjacent Boston College High School. The Beacons improve to 16-12 on the season, while the Lions fall to 1-24.
Mondalto also tied a school-record with a pair of triples and five runs scored and racked up the third-highest single-game mark of 11 total bases, adding two doubles and a single to his day.
UMass Boston established a single-game record with six triples and 39 total bases, as well, and saw four players collect three or more hits and drive in three runs apiece.
The Beacons scored three times in the bottom of the first inning, getting run-producing singles from Mondalto and sophomore third baseman Mike Yagmin (New Britain, CT), but Emerson cut the lead to 3-1, scoring a run with two outs in the top of the third inning after Lucas Einstein singled to right field and Andrew Defarias and David Barlett drew back-to-back walks to load the bases to set up a run-scoring wild pitch, allowing Einstein to cross the plate.
UMass Boston put the game away, scoring seven runs in the next two innings to take a 10-1 lead. The Lions put up two more runs in the top of the fifth inning when Mike Balger led off with a single and came home on a two-run homer to right field by Einstein to make it 10-3, but it would be all Emerson would get as the Beacons scored the next nine runs.
Junior center fielder Darwin L. Gonzalez (Lawrence, MA) was 3-3 on the day with a pair of triples and three runs batted in, while scoring five runs for UMass Boston. Yagmin also registered three hits, including two doubles to go with three RBI and two runs scored, while sophomore second baseman Bob Arey (Walpole, MA) collected three hits and drove in three runs to go with a pair of runs scored. Junior shortstop David DiCenso (Revere, MA) also knocked in three runs, going 2-4 with a triple.
Einstein led the Lions with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored, while Balger contributed by going 2-3 with a double.
Freshman left-hander Dan Morrison (North Andover, MA) picked up his first collegiate win for UMB, pitching three innings in relief, while allowing two runs on two hits and a walk to go with five strikeouts. David Barlett took the loss for Emerson, allowing 10 runs (nine earned) in three and two-thirds innings of work on 10 hits and two walks.
UMass Boston will be in action again when it travels to Keene, NH on Monday, April 26 at 12:00 p.m. to take on Keene State College for a Little East Conference double-header.
