BOSTON, MA – Sophomore forward Steve Kelleher (Rockland, MA) and freshman forward Rick Tennyson (Hingham, MA) each tallied a goal and an assist to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston men’s ice hockey team to its first win of the year over Framingham State College, 5-1, on Tuesday, December 30, at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 1-2-0 on the season, while the Rams fall to 0-5-0.
UMass Boston wasted no time getting on the board as Kelleher netted the opening score just 18 seconds into the contest when senior forward Patrick Donlan (Norwell, MA) and freshman defenseman Andrew Ward (Evanston, IL) found him for the score for a 1-0 edge. Junior Nick Tsiantar (Thousand Oaks, CA) gave the Beacons a 2-0 lead less than five minutes later when Donlan and Kelleher teamed up on the assist at the 5:04 mark of the first session. UMass Boston kept the pressure on in the second stanza with two more goals, the first of which coming on a shot by freshman Dave Baczkowski (Lancaster, MA) just 3:14 into the period for his first collegiate goal on a feed from junior forward Julian Giantonio (Everett, MA) for a 3-0 lead. Freshman forward Chris Flaherty (South Boston, MA) also registered his first career goal at 10:15 of the middle period when Tennyson found him for the score and a 4-0 UMB advantage.
Framingham State prevented the shutout after being blanked for the first 56:06 of the contest when Jeffrey Rubino went top shelf with a pass from Craig Stern at 16:06 of the final period to make it 4-1. Tennyson capped the scoring for the Beacons with just 25 seconds left in the contest when he deposited a feed from Giantonio for a 5-1 final.
Sophomore goaltender Sean Bertoni (Franklin, MA) stopped 46 shots to earn his first career victory, while starting Rams goalie Paul Morgan made three saves before being relieved at the 5:04 mark of the first period by Josh Wallace who stoned 26 shots.
The Beacons are now 1-4-0 after back-to-back losses to the Eastern College Athletic Conference foes Wesleyan University by 6-1 on Friday, December 3, and Trinity College (CT) by 6-1 on the day after. They will be in action again on Saturday, December 11, at Western New England College.
