Michael Owens, a senior majoring in political science at the University of Massachusetts Boston is leading the race for Town Council District 5 in Braintree.
In an interview with the Mass Media, Owens, who also attended the Braintree Public Schools, revealed that his background with public education inspired him to take on public service. He encourages other students to be active in their community, and to get involved in his campaign.
“UMass allows me to further [myself]. Braintree School System transformed me into a patriotic and a devoted citizen,” states Owens.
“I am fighting to be an active representative of my district,” says Owens. He wants to be the leader and the voice of his community, providing advocacy for the needs of his district at Town Hall.
Owens is a mentor at the Braintree Community Youth Center, and he has served as Chapter Director of Generation Citizen at UMass Boston.
Owens has also interned at Quincy District Court, then-U.S. Sen. John Kerry’s office, and the Community Affairs division of Gov. Deval Patrick’s office. Community and public service have always been important to Owens.
Inhabitants of Braintree are excited about the possibility of having Owens as a city councilor. As Owens put it, “People are excited to see a change in local government. They are looking for an active voice, somebody who is dedicated, and who gets into the race for the right reasons.”
Owens believes that his diverse background, especially his internships, gives him an edge and prepares him for the field. He encourages other students to always look for internship and volunteering opportunities. “Internship and volunteering set you apart in today’s world market as a young person. Those opportunities complement your education,” he said.
“I cannot [have a successful campaign] without the help of volunteers,” said Owens, adding that he encourages others to join him, especially UMass Boston students majoring in political science. “Of course, I want to be supported by fellow alumni and students,” he said.
