On Oct. 1, University of Massachusetts Boston Chancellor J. Keith Motley hosted a student luncheon with Honors Program students in the Chancellor’s Conference Room.
The chancellor often hosts luncheons with various student communities throughout the UMass Boston campus to hear what students are doing at the university and how experiences on campus are shaping their lives.
Students had the opportunity to mingle and introduce themselves to one another as well as introduce themselves to the chancellor. While students were introducing themselves the chancellor inquired about their majors, where they grew up, and who had been especially helpful to them during their time at the university.
The setting was friendly and light, and students were able to recount their experiences at UMass Boston thus far. Honors Program Director Rajini Srikanth and Honors Program Coordinator Joyce Morrissey were two people who were frequently referred to as being especially helpful and always there to offer reliable support.
After formal introductions had been made, students were given the chance to ask Motley questions about the university. Students raised questions concerning parking, residence halls, and the selection process for finding a commencement speaker.
Motley informed students that while the construction for parking may pose an inconvenience at the current moment, parking garages are in the works, and residence halls are also being planned out due to the 25-year Master Plan.He also mentioned that commencement speakers are chosen by a committee, and he then went on to ask students who they would like to see at commencement.
“You’re at the university during an exciting time in our university’s history,” said Motley. “This past summer, the UMass Board of Trustees approved an Honors College being created here on campus, and some of you will be the very first graduates from such a college.”
