A third and final vote has determined the new Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Senate Speaker and the Chair of Campus and Community Affairs (CCA). Senator Ignacio Chaparro beat Senator José Martinez 13 to 21 for the Speaker position, and Senator Evans Asumadu beat Senator Cecilia Sosa-Patterson 13:20 (with one abstention) for the position of CCA chair.
The initial election took place in person during the swearing in of Senators-elect for the 2013-2014 school year. In this round of elections, in which 24 senators participated, both Chaparro and Asumadu were defeated by their respective opponents.
Two weeks after the first round of elections, the results were declared invalid by the USG Judicial Branch. According to the Judicial Branch, not every Senator-elect who voted in person was properly sworn in first.
Some Senators, who spoke to the Mass Media anonymously, believed that the re-vote constituted an attempt by Chaparro to subvert the elections process and secure a position. A senator and friend of Chaparro wrote to the Mass Media to confirm that Chaparro had lobbied to have the first round of election results invalidated.
Of the 30 Senators-elect who voted in the initial election, 24 voted in a special online election. When that election resulted in ties for the CCA chair and Speaker positions, 20 Senators and USG Vice President Kayla Worthey voted to break the tie.
The final elections results were released by Chief Justice Sonia Wahome on June 24. At 10:16 p.m. on June 25, Senator Chaparro wrote an email to his fellow Senators. Within an hour, the email was leaked to the Mass Media by an angry Senator. It read as follows:
My USG Family,
I would like to start off by thanking each and every single one of you for your patience and cooperation in ensuring that this judicial process which we have overcome was successful in upholding the Constitution and By-laws of the Undergraduate Student Government. As publically elected officials by our constituents, we all took an oath that we must uphold and move together as a coherent body to ensure that we serve the best interests of the student body at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
There is one quote that I always will keep in mind because it has rung through me since the beginning of being a part of this Student Government. This quote being, “Strength in Unity.” Some of you may be familiar with it since our former Speaker did his best to ensure that we collectively worked together. I always keep this in mind because I am so proud and grateful to have the opportunity to serve as the Speaker of the Senate now, and I want to work with each and every single one of you to lead the future of UMass Boston. As a Student Government, we have common goals, but although we may have different ideas of how to reach these common goals, it is with our diversity of ideas that we see creativity and leaders be able to show their passions in this public office that we hold so dearly to our hearts.
I truly look forward to working with each and every single one of you this year and will do my best to ensure that I’m available to hear your ideas individually and collectively so that we can work together to making sure that we do what we can to make UMass Boston a better place for everyone.
Thank you for your time, and see you all soon!
Best regards,
Iggy
