Looking for volunteer opportunities? Join ProjectServe for their annual Day of Service on Saturday, April 26 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. ProjectServe is a community service club that falls under Office of Student Leadership and Community Engagement (OSLCE), and they host service days three times throughout the academic year.
ProjectServe exists as a community outreach program where students volunteer year round in events both on and off campus. Events this year have ranged from participating in the Breathe Deep Boston 5k in support of Lung Cancer Awareness to participating in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.
The Day of Service is a day when the University of Massachusetts Boston community comes together to help locally based organizations. Past partnerships have included AIDS Action, Ethos, Many Helping Hands, Cradles to Crayons, and Saint Ambrose Shelter for Families.
The day itself goes like this: volunteers arrive in the morning for the light breakfast and a debriefing of the day from Sherrod Williams, director of OSLCE. Team t-shirts are handed out, and the volunteers are divided into smaller groups then sent off to the various organizations throughout Boston.
Everyone who has been involved with this can attest to the fact that the work is rewarding, the groups are fun, and the organizations are extremely grateful for the helping hands.
Sophomore Alex Moffatt, a past sight leader, says, “it was tiring but a lot of fun, especially as a sight leader. When you step back at the end of the day and realize what you did for the community, it’s incredibly rewarding.”
Not only is the event rewarding, but it is a great opportunity to foster important leadership skills and to take initiative in both the UMass Boston and the Greater Boston community.
Sophomore Sarah Bolden was involved in the Fall Day of Service this year and says, “UMass Boston is such a community service-oriented school, and it shows in events like these. Through the Day of Service, I was able to foster leadership skills and really engage with a community that I didn’t really get a chance to do so in this extent before. It was so much, and I think everyone should sign up for it.”
Students are still able to sign up for the event, and you won’t regret it if you do! It is a fantastic volunteer and leadership building opportunity, as well as a great way to have fun with peers while also benefiting the community. T-shirts, breakfast, and lunch will be provided to volunteers.
