The acknowledgement of Black History Month is important as it allows for individuals of color to get the recognition that they deserve for the contributions that they have made to society. Whether it be music, sports, social movements, etc., African Americans have played a vital role in helping shape America into the country that it is today. One man in particular, Garrett Morgan, invented two devices that are crucial to society.
One of Morgan’s inventions was the safety hood. He came up with this when he witnessed a firefighter struggling to overcome the heavy smoke while on the job. One of the most important features of Morgan’s safety hood was a wet sponge; this helped strain out the smoke and cool the air. Today, there are countless stories of firefighters who exhibit bravery as they put their lives on the line to save the lives of others. If it weren’t for Morgan, the duty of a firefighter would be much harder when faced with a large amount of smoke.
Morgan is also the inventor of the first traffic light, sadly inspired by a horrific traffic accident Morgan experienced first-hand. He filed for a patent in 1912, and his invention has not only helped vehicles but also motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians to avoid harmful interactions. While there are still terrible and sometimes fatal traffic accidents, the presence of the traffic signal helps to limits the chances of any occurring.
There are a number of African Americans that have made profound contributions to society, and Black History Month serves as a way to remember and honor them. But learning about important black people does not just have to be only during one month, as there is plenty of amazing information that one can find about prominent African American figures all year round.
