John Wick is cool, focused, and super badass. And that is how you will feel after watching the new movie by the same name. Keanu Reeves plays an ex-hitman who comes out of retirement to avenge his stolen car and dead dog, given to him from his late wife. The movie has everything an action-packed movie would have: guns, explosions, high speed car chases, and crime. It will leave the audience feeling pumped and ready to kick some butt.
Some action movies have distasteful jokes that seem not to fit in with the tone of the movie, but “John Wick“ plays on the hilarious tone that the protagonist is a really scary man and he should not be messed with. Seeing the villainous characters fear him just from hearing his name is uncommon in stories, and is pretty funny. What also made the audience laugh was the lack of prior knowledge on who John Wick actually is, and seeing that being answered in some ways was amusing and satisfying. Turns out everyone, from the hotel manager to the clean-up crew, knows exactly who he is and they all do not want to mess with him. Throughout the film there is a variety of emotions felt for Wick and his enemies. Seeing John Wick miss his wife is heartbreaking, but no one wants to see the enemy’s father get hurt just because his son is a screw up. The loyalty the characters show for Wick is sweet, perpetuating the pity that the audience feels for the avenger.
The film is different from other typical action movies. It is clean and straight forward; there are no random side plots that deter the main point of the story. The movie shows what happens behind the scenes, when the main character isn’t off fighting bad guys. Very rarely does a movie show a cleanup crew taking away the dead bodies and cleaning up all the blood in Wick’s home. In a way, it answers a lot of questions that people have been asking for years.
Of course this movie has pretty cool fight scenes, making people wish they could be as bad-ass as the characters. But some scenes were just prolonging the inevitable and got boring. There is some complexity to the characters, more in the villain than the protagonist himself, which is interesting and exciting to watch. Fair warning that the bad guys are Russian and have thick accents, which were really hard to understand at some points of the film.
The film overall is pretty good, and fun to see with a group of friends or family. It is one of the few action movies that actually make sense and should be watched to understand what makes a movie so good. See it on the big screen and prepare for a fun night. In theaters now.
