The University of Massachusetts Boston kicked off the Fall 2014 semester with its annual Welcome Week. The first two weeks of classes were full of events to get students settled in for the semester ahead.
On Tuesday, Sept. 2, students were able to stop by the upper level of the Campus Center for drinks and snacks, and were also welcomed by Chancellor J. Keith Motley. Snacks were handed out in the Campus Center throughout Welcome Week, so students could grab a treat between classes.
On Sept. 3, students headed to the 1st floor of the Campus Center to the Employment Fair. There, students were able to find a variety of employment opportunities both on and off campus.
That afternoon, the women’s soccer team went up against Wesleyan University outside the Clark Athletic Center. The game resulted with a victory for UMass Boston, with a final score of 1-0.
All morning on Friday, September 5, students could walk by the Vendor Fair on the way to classes. Local craftsmen spent the day displaying their products on the Campus Center terrace.
Welcome Week continued on Monday, September 8, with UMass Boston’s 50th Birthday Bash. The Student Arts and Events Council encouraged students to celebrate half a century of UMass Boston in the 1st floor of the Campus Center.
On the morning of the September 9, students were able to go to the Campus Center for the Student Activities Involvement Fair. Students had the opportunity to get a look into UMass Boston’s 100+ student organizations.
The following day, September 10, students could attend the Volunteer Fair, in order to check out 30+ nonprofit organizations. Students spoke to organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters, Jumpstart and Campus Kitchens for a chance to learn about volunteer and internship programs.
During that afternoon, students were able to take a break from classes to watch a performance from magicians Peter Boie and Norman Ng. Students were treated to unbelievable magic and a fun, lighthearted performance.
The final day of Welcome Week began with an address from Chancellor Motley on Thursday morning. Students gathered in the Campus Center Ballroom as Chancellor Motley officially welcomed in 2014-2015 academic year.
The afternoon brought the Student BBQ on the Front Circle of the Campus Center. All students were allowed tograb food and listen to music between classes.
Following the BBQ, students could end the afternoon with ice cream and pizza in the Campus Center.
The final event of Welcome Week was Movie Under the Stars, held by the Student Arts and Events Council. Students gathered in the Campus Center Ballroom to enjoy two films. Maleficent was shown first at 7:30 p.m., followed by 22 Jump Street at 9:15 p.m. Students finished out Welcome Week with a relaxing night amongst friends.
