Men’s Basketball
6-1 (0-0 LEC)
The Beacons have enjoyed their best start in years, behind great plays from a core group of veteran leaders. They beat Fitchburg State, 77-67, on Nov. 25 behind 24 points from Carl Joseph. They next saw action the following Friday at the UMass Boston Harbor Invitational. The Beacons advanced to the championship game with an 85-76 win over College of St. Joseph’s. Once again, Carl Joseph led the way, with 29 points and seven rebounds. The Beacons lost the following night to Eastern Nazarene in the Championship, 74-66, despite Karl Agenor’s monster game, in which he scored 12 points and grabbed 17 boards. The Beacons closed out this stretch with their most impressive win of the season, as they shocked eleventh ranked MIT on the road, 59-52. Joseph scored 23 points in what was a tight game from the opening tip. The Beacons were stellar defensively, as MIT was held to a paltry 17-of-49 from the field for the entire game. The Beacons are looking sharp early in the season as they try to give coach Charlie Titus a proper sendoff with a conference championship.
Women’s Basketball
3-2 (0-0 LEC)
The Beacons have had a fairly quiet stretch, only playing twice in the last two weeks. They split those two contests. The first game was a nail-biter at Fitchburg State, which they lost, 60-57, in overtime. The game was so close that the teams were tied at 25 at the half, and 50 at the end of regulation, before Fitchburg state scored the winning bucket with seven seconds to go in the extra period. Olivia Murphy turned in a huge game with 17 points and 18 rebounds, but the Beacons had trouble overcoming a poor shooting night in which they only shot 30.9% from the floor. In fact, both teams were off, as they combined for 46-of-147 shooting on the evening. The Beacons next traveled to Mount Ida, where they throttled the Mustangs, 76-45. Grace Geary led the way for the Beacons — who out-rebounded the Mustangs 50-34 — with 24 points and five assists. The Beacons have three games remaining before their winter break, and they seem to be getting hot at the perfect time.
Men’s Hockey
9-0 (5-0 ECAC East)
The Beacons have been rolling for the entire season, and they aren’t showing any signs of slowing down. They started this stretch with a 6-2 beat-down of Wesleyan University on Nov. 29. The Beacons scored four goals in the first period and cruised from there. Mike Kuhn scored twice for the Beacons and Colin Larkin, Kit Sitterley, Frankie DeAugustine, and Josh Haverstrom all added a goal. The Beacons remained in Connecticut the next day, where they beat Trinity, 5-3. Although they trailed after the first period, the Beacons rebounded nicely with three second period goals. Nathan Millam and Stephen Buco each scored twice and Mike Miller added one more goal. Zach Andrews added 34 saves in net. The guys won their ninth game in a row the next Friday, when they beat the University of New England, 3-1 behind two goals from Millam and another from Buco. The Beacons are currently ranked 10th in the nation and are looking like serious national title contenders, and they now have a month to rest up and prepare to defend their Codfish Bowl title.
