Elysia Smith, a first year graduate student and former University of Massachusetts undergraduate, was spotted outside the elevators of Healey Library sporting an intricately and colorfully designed scarf. As a backdrop to her eye catching statement piece, she wore an olive green sweater and black leggings with wedged boots. A jeweled nose ring and rimmed glasses added an extra touch of style.
“I’d describe my style as punk-rock grandma,” she joked. “I usually get my stuff from thrift stores, vintage clothing stores, and friends’ closets.”
The scarf Smith wore once belonged to her ex-girlfriend’s mother, and her sweater belonged to another friend. She bought her leggings and boots from Urban Outfitters and Designer Shoe Warehouse, respectively.
“These are my winter boots. This is me giving in. They’re waterproof and they have a heel, so I had to quit resisting,” she said. Despite her complaints, her boots feature a quality suede-like material and tasteful buckles.
Much of her inspiration stems from the many magazines she read growing up and the fashion of the 1950s and 1960s.
