Reinaldo Lopes defeated Justin Lipomi in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, and in the process clinched UMass Boston’s second win of the season, a 5-4 victory over Bridgewater State College.

The victory is the Beacons’ second-straight in-conference win, elevating them to 2-1 in Little East play and third place in conference.

“I felt calm,” Beacons coach Eric Berg said while the final singles match built up. “You could feel the match would go all the way to the wire, [but] I felt a calmness in the way [Lopes] was playing.”

Berg said that he “feels good” about the early in-conference victories. “The guys have picked up a lot of confidence from it,” he added.

Playing their home game at the Boston College High School courts last Tuesday, Jovan Jordan-Whittier won his eighth-straight match over BSC’s Matt Charest, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, while Ali Al-Sabbagh earned his third singles win of the season with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Gonzalo Gomez.

Berg explained that his team is gaining more and more confidence with every match, that they are starting to become more comfortable. “Going into these [future] matches, we feel like we have a good chance,” the second-year coach said.

The Jordan-Whittier/Braude duo got back on the winning track with an 8-3 win in doubles play over Matt Charest and Giovanni Cuscina of the Bears.

Paul Braude, Amit Kumar and Matthias Busch all lost their singles matches.

The tennis team next plays Tuesday at home against Salem State College.
