Late-inning Losses Hurting Men’s Lacrosse

Another day and another heartbreaking loss for the UMass Boston men’s lacrosse team.

Last Tuesday afternoon saw the Beacons fall, 9-8, to visiting Salem State College when Vikings senior attackman Ross Arnold scored the tie-breaking goal with less than a minute to play in the game. With the loss UMass Boston falls to 3-9 on the season.

In typical fashion, the Beacons didn’t waste any time getting on the board when junior midfielder Justin Mahoney found the back of the net just two minutes into the contest.

Salem State midfielder Alex Verity got the Vikings on the score sheet for the first time that afternoon when he evened the score at one apiece halfway through the first frame.

The Beacons took control of the rest of first quarter scoring with goals coming from junior attackman Peter Kovach, sophomore midfielder Dale Nunn and freshman midfielder Jared Kinch.

UMB took a 4-1 lead in the second quarter, and continued to tack on the points when Kinch scored his second goal of the game late in the quarter to put the score at 5-1. Salem State answered back with two quick goals courtesy of Tim Bartlett and Robert Mulroy to put the score at 5-3 going into halftime.

Freshman phenom John Canty opened third-period scoring with a man-advantage goal, and Verity answered for the Vikings to notch the score at 6-4.

From there, the two teams traded goals when Canty registered his second tally of the day at 3:06 and Nate Snow fired back with 1:59 remaining in the frame to put the score at 7-5 heading into the final fifteen minutes of the game.

At 9:45 of the fourth quarter, Kovach netted his second goal of the game, widening the Beacons’ lead to 8-5. But with 8:16 left to play in the game, Salem State went on a scoring tear, putting up four unanswered goals.

With the score tied at, 8-8, and 2:44 remaining to play, UMass Boston saw another late-game lead slip between their fingers.

Two minutes later, with 45 seconds remaining in the game, Arnold provided the decisive blow. Arnold’s goal capped off the Viking’s impressive comeback for a final score of 9-8.

During the scoring flurry the Vikings saw goals from James Cross, Justin Jones, Verity and the game-winner from Arnold.

Sophomore net-minder Aaron Pollock made nine saves on the afternoon for UMass Boston, while junior goalie Keith Hardy stopped twelve Beacon attempts for the Vikings.

As the regular season comes to an end, the Beacons will be playing their first round of playoff games on the road.
