Gym’s Student Employees Laid Off. At least five students who worked at UMass Boston’s gym facilities were laid off recently due to the closing of the ice-rink and swimming pool. The pool closed due to repairs being done on the facility’s ceiling, and the rink closed as scheduled for the spring and summer months. Students working in the pool and rink areas were removed from their positions due to the structural closings. Likewise, students employed by the Beacon Fitness Center were dismissed from their jobs due to reorganizing.
Admin Schedules Made Easier at UMass Boston. With the introduction of CollegeNET’s R25 program, UMass Boston will implement a more effective scheduling system that will link UMass Boston’s administrative calendar directly onto the college website, www.umb.edu. As well as offering a better link to the calendar, the program will also be able to male it easier for UMass Boston students to book rooms in the Campus Center for events. The program is set to launch end of April.
Our Boy is Wicked Smaht. UMass Boston professor Alfred Noel is one of the eighteen mathematicians computing a century-old formula that may help solve the mysteries of the universe and lead to new breakthroughs in science, engineering and finance. The formula, called E8, is a mathematical tool meant to study symmetry, and is so large that, if it were printed out, it would cover the island of Manhattan. Noel teaches Calculus and Probability and Statistics courses at UMass Boston, while doing his research at MIT.
UMass Boston Program Earns Respect in Belgium. UMass Boston’s Emerging Leader’s Program (ELP) will be honored in Europe as one of three finalists in an international competition in management education. On June 11, the European Foundation will honor the ELP for Management Development in Brussels for its innovation and creativity in the learning approach. ELP was launched by an initial grant from State Street Corporation, and invites senior executives in corporations and non-profits to nominate young professionals in the Greater Boston area who have demonstrated potential and want to enhance their leadership skills and opportunities.
Chancellor Collins Announces Teaching Award Recipients. Professor Russell K. Schutt of the Sociology department, Professor Peter N Kiang of the Curriculum and Instruction Department, and Professor Jennifer H. Radden of the Philosophy Department will each be awarded the Chancellor’s Distinguished Service, Teaching, and Scholarship Awards respectively. The awards will be given to the three professors at this year’s commencement.
Black Student Center Fashion Show Cancelled. The show, scheduled for April 29, was cancelled after the Black Student Center did not acquire sufficient funds before the date needed to hold the event at the scheduled time. The show, which had already experienced a date change, is one of the longest-running and best-attended annual events on campus.
The Campus Center is conducting a survey to gather information about the Campus Center’s current services and services students would like to see in the future. UMB’s 9th Annual Good Neighbor Day was held on Friday, April 27, however, due to the weather some projects will be rescheduled. Members of the UMB community participated in service projects to clean up sites around Columbia Point.
