The Beacon Spotlight this week shines on baseball player Mike Andriano who has been named Little East Conference Baseball Rookie of the Week for the week of April 2-8.
The freshman pitcher made two appearances on the week, including one start and was outstanding, compiling a 1-0 record, while throwing seven innings, allowing just one unearned run for a 0.00 earned run average on one hit, four walks and four strikeouts. The left-hander held opponents to a meager .043 (1-23) batting average. Andriano began the week with a 9-2 victory at Salem State College on April 3, hurling six innings, while giving up one unearned run on one hit and three walks to go with four punch-outs. Andriano came back at the end of the week to throw an inning of no-hit relief, while walking one batter in the first game of a doubleheader at Little East Conference foe Rhode Island College on April 7.
Andriano is enjoying a fantastic freshman season and is, arguably, the Beacons’ best pitcher to this point in the season, leading the conference with a 1.67 earned run average, while ranking second in wins with a 3-1 record and third with 27 innings pitched. He stands tops on the UMass Boston staff in wins, innings pitched and complete games (two). The rookie is tied for the team lead with four games started and is tied for third with five appearances as well. The southpaw has been extremely tough on lefties, having yet to allow a hit in nine at-bats, while holding all opponents to just a .202 (20-99) batting mark and issuing just seven free passes. He is allowing a staff-low 6.67 hits per nine innings pitched and has been tough as nails with two outs, holding opponents to a paltry .097 (3-31) average, while being stingy with runners on base, holding opposing hitters to a .190 (8-42) mark.
