HANAFIN LIFTS UMASS BOSTON MEN’S LACROSSE OVER PLYMOUTH STATE IN OVERTIME, 9-8

Senior attackman Christopher Hanafin picked up a ground ball and netted a goal with 27.4 seconds left in overtime, while falling back from 10 yards away, to lead the UMass Boston men’s lacrosse team over Plymouth State University, 9-8, today in the quarterfinals of the Little East Conference tournament at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. UMass Boston has now advanced to the tournament semifinals in six of the last seven seasons.Hanafin was responsible for the contest going into overtime when he found the back of the net with 66 seconds left in regulation to tie the tilt at 8-8 and cap a stretch of three unanswered goals for UMass Boston in a span of 7:01. Plymouth State owned an 8-5 advantage following a score by PSU junior attackman Adam Krinsky with nine minutes left in the fourth quarter. Sophomore attackman Peter Kovach began the Beacons’ comeback with a goal coming at 8:07 of the fourth period to cut the deficit to 8-6 and sophomore midfielder Bobby Cusack followed with another unassisted goal at the 4:14 mark of the quarter to pull UMass Boston to within 8-7 before Hanafin registered the equalizer.

Beacons, Dorval down Fitchburg State College, 5-3

UMass Boston starting pitcher Mike Dorval fired a complete-game to help the Beacons take down Fitchburg State College, 5-3, Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game on Senior Day at Fitchburg.Dorval scattered 10 hits and three runs while fanning seven and walking just two batters to guide UMass Boston to a 15-16 record. The Falcons, who used seven pitchers, fell to 16-15 with the loss despite a 3-for-4 afternoon from Curt Heher. UMass Boston strung together its fifth-inning rally with two outs in the frame on a two-run triple by Sean Ketterer and a two-run home run to left centerfield by Jaime Soto. Ketterer finished the day 2-for-5 while Soto was 2-for-4.

UMASS BOSTON MEN’S TENNIS PLACES SIXTH AT LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The UMass Boston men’s tennis team compiled 4.5 points to finish in sixth place at the Little East Conference Championships in Providence, RI on the campus of host Rhode Island College. University of Southern Maine won the team title with 19.5 points.The Beacons gained four points in the first day of competition, thanks to wins at second singles, fourth singles, first doubles and second doubles. Number four seed sophomore Paul Braude defeated Chris Sims of UMass Dartmouth, 8-3, in the first round of the flight two singles bracket to advance to the semifinals, but was defeated by the number one-seeded Josh Warren from University of Southern Maine, 6-2, 6-3. Junior Glen Schleehauf registered an upset at flight four singles as the number six-seed, easily defeating third-seeded Lorne Teeter from Rhode Island College, 8-1, before falling in the semifinals to number two seed Matt Kelly from Bridgewater State College, 6-2, 6-3. UMass Boston’s flight one doubles tandem of Alexis Roux and Daniel Bueno won as the fourth seed, taking down Adrien Malosse and Jim Lozzi of Salem State College, 8-4, before dropping their semifinals match to first seed Craig Spann and Warren of Southern Maine, 6-1, 6-4. The Beacons picked up another point at flight two doubles with the second-seeded duo of Braude and Schleehauf winning over the number seven-seeded Colin and Forest Robertson from Western Connecticut State University when their opponents had to retire with UMass Boston leading the match, 3-2. Braude and Schleehauf looked to be on their way to the bracket finals after winning the first set, 6-1, over six-seed Chris and Ken Sims of UMass Dartmouth, but dropped the next two sets, 6-1, 7-5.
