Tucked away on the third floor of the Healey Library is a new tremendous technological resource-the UMass Boston Media Center. About 20 to 30 students visit the center each week. The Media Center houses the latest hardware, with brand new Macintoshes as well as high-powered PCs, and design, production, sound, and video editing software. Media specialist Jessica Downa runs the fledging Media Center. Through the Media Center, Downa offers one-on-one training sessions in various media functions. “If you don’t have time to take a full course, I can give you the basics in Web-site construction, digital video and audio editing,” Downa said. In fact, the variety of services offered is one of the things the she likes most about her job: “It’s really creative; I’m not working with one medium all day, every day,” Downa said. “Some days I’ll be working on flyers, some days on podcasts, sometimes with students who need help making DVDs and CDs.” The Media Center boasts five iMac G5s (with built in Web cams), a Dell XPS with dual monitors and 5.1 surround sound speakers (for audio and video digitizing), a slide scanner, six flat bed scanners and three color printers among its equipment. Not only does your UMass Boston ID get you access to the machines, The Media Center contains a multimedia lab where you can get expert help on developing multimedia projects from scanning images, creating flyers, building Web sites to digitizing audio and video. Media consultants are available to assist you during lab hours. “We’re still in our infancy,” Downa added. “We’ll be coming up with more workshop trainings, demonstrations from guest speakers.” Another great feature of the Media Center is its Language Lab which contains interactive curriculum materials which complement textbooks in various languages taught at UMass Boston, including elementary and intermediate Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish courses. Better yet, students in these courses receive one credit from attending the lab and completing assignments. Students attend labs outside of regularly scheduled class time and off-campus access can be obtained by getting a username and password from a class instructor.
