Beacons 1-1 in Playoffs

Salve Regina scored a goal 16 seconds into the first period of its ECAC Women’s East quarterfinal match up with host UMass Boston and never looked back.

The fifth-seeded Seahawks upset the fourth-seeded Lady Beacons, 7-2, behind two goals each from Molly Golden and Caitlin Campbell. Salve goaltender Rebecca Simmons recorded 23 saves in the win.

The Lady Beacons found themselves trailing 3-0 after the first period, but cut the deficit to 3-2 when Katelyn Corsino and Lauren Duran potted goals 1:43 apart to get within one. Salve’s Kendra Andrie stretched the lead to 4-2 49 seconds later and the Seahawks cruised from there.

In men’s action, Ryan Donovan reverted to his 2008 ECAC East Goalie of the Year form and UMass Boston defeated Norwich University in a stunning 1-0 overtime victory.

The Beacons’ junior goalie faced 39 shots (12 in overtime), turning away each one as eighth-seeded UMass Boston shocked top-seeded Norwich in the quarterfinals of the ECAC East tournament.

Freshman Wayne Sands netted the unassisted game-winner 15:46 into overtime to seal the victory. For the second consecutive season, UMass Boston has upset a top-two seed in the ECAC East playoffs. The Beacons knocked off second-seeded Babson College, 5-2, last season in the first round of the league’s playoffs.
