There are always topics to ponder and opinions consider the wide expanse of Boston sports. Every week, the Mass Media talks to Alan Wickstrom, UMB’s Sports Information Director, to get his opinion on a relevant Boston sports topic.
This week, we ask Alan if his perception of Jose Canseco has changed since he released “Juiced,” his tell-all book about the steroid culture in baseball four years ago.
I’m not sure that my opinion of him has really changed. When he first came out with Juiced, I believed him anyway, but when I say my opinion hasn’t changed, I mean when I found out he was juicing I…lost all respect for him, as I would any player, who has shown such disrespect for the game of baseball. He has been unapologetic and so brash about his use of steroids and it offends me as a fan.
If he would have continued to get work with teams, then I don’t think the book gets written. That being said, I also think he did it for the money, which would have been a motivation if he was in financial dire straits, which could have been the case as well. I think it’s great that it’s all coming out, but I’m not about to put Canseco on a pedestal, because I don’t think, as he says, that he did it for the good of the game.
