New Science Building to Begin Construction ShortlyConstruction on the first new academic building at UMB in years, part of UMass Boston’s 25-year Master Plan, will begin shortly, Chancellor Motley said. The funding will come from the Higher Education bond bill, in which UMass Boston will receive $125 million in new funding to help jumpstart building plans and shore up existing facilities. The bulk of the funding, $100 million, is designated for a new academic building, while the remainder is for stabilizing the campus substructure. The buildings are being designed by architectural firm Goody Clancy, and they estimate the new Science building will take 18-24 months to construct. Co-Sponsor a Campus Blood DriveUniversity Health Services coordinates several blood drives during each academic year. UMB’s next blood drive is scheduled for October 7, 2009. If your department, group or center would like to co-sponsor an upcoming blood drive contact Linda Jorgensen, (617)287-5680, Director of UHS Health Education and Wellness Program. University Health Services will work with the American Red Cross to schedule and promote your blood drive. What is needed is assistance on the day of the drive to assist with the registration and staffing the ‘canteen’. There is no prior training or experience required, just a group of people who are willing to provide their time and energy.
