The Professional
This young lady wants to be taken seriously. Nice shoes, a botton-down shirt, and some canvas shorts complete the look. She’s here to network. Most students who said they’ll be looking professional explained that they usually come to class straight from work. “I won’t be wearing jenas or flip flops, because I’m not supposed to at work,” said Lily. Alex, who’s hoping to get a job at a lab, said he’ll be wearing his business attire, i.e. “a polo shirt and a nice pair of khakis.” The Fashionista This girl likes to experiment. Her outfit may have a little too much going, but it’ll definetly catch your eye. Not many students admit to being fashionistas (though there are plenty of them in the hallways), but some say they definitely used to be. “In high school I was trying to be trendy and keep up with everyone,” said Leslie, who is starting her junior year. “But now I just want to look plain because I don’t want to be judged. I just want to blend in.” The Sex Kitten She’ll never admit it, but this girl loves the attention that she gets from her red lipstick, mini skirt and high heels. For the first day of school, she’s going all out. Eveybody notices this one, some with delight, others with disdain. Girls who dress too sexy “stand out, but you’ll never even try to talk to them” said Dave, a junior. “It becomes a marker. Your eyes are always looking for them, and you always find them.”
The Underwhelmer
Jeans, a plain t-shirt, Converse shoes or flip flops, she doesn’t really care that it’s the first day. Or maybe that’s just what she wants us to think… The vast majority of the students we asked said that they belong to this catagory. Non-degree student Molly explains, “it makes me stressed out if I’m all dressy because I’ll be focusing more on my clothes than on my classes, so I won’t be wearing anything fancy.”
