With the NFL free agency already underway and the draft only six weeks away, the New England Patriots have a lot of tough decisions to make in the near future. They have already added a few complimentary pieces, Michael Bennett chief among them. With that said, since Jimmy Garoppolo was traded to San Francisco in 2017, the biggest question surrounding the Patriots has been, “who will be Tom Brady’s successor?”
The two headliner names for the 2019 NFL Draft are Kyler Murray and Dwayne Haskins. Both are pretty much locked in to go in the top 6, so neither will be available for the Patriots even if they wanted to try to trade up. Drew Lock, out of Missouri, is up next on the big board, followed by Will Grier, out of West Virginia. I personally think Grier would be a great fit in the Patriots’ system, but unless Bill Belichick wants to use a second-round pick on him, I am afraid he will be off the board by the third round. If they cannot find a viable option for the future in this year’s draft, do they have any other options?
They could always just stick with Brian Hoyer or another average backup and punt until the 2020 draft, but it definitely would be nice to get someone who has real potential under Tom Brady for his last few seasons. This is where the Arizona Cardinals come into play, who actually have the number-one overall pick in this year’s draft. Their new head coach, Kliff Kingsbury, has already told reporters that the team intends on selecting Kyler Murray with their top pick. That makes for an interesting quarterback situation in Arizona, as they already drafted Josh Rosen with the tenth overall pick in 2018.
Kingsbury actually was the backup quarterback on the Patriots in 2003, so he has some sort of relationship with Belichick and the team. As we all should know by now, Belichick loves making a trade when he is getting good value. Josh Rosen’s price would definitely go down due to the fact that Arizona would be desperate to move on from him if they have Murray, so that is where the Patriots could swoop in and make a big trade.
There is no doubt about it. Rosen had a rough go of it in his rookie season with the Cardinals. He threw for 2,278 yards, had 11 touchdowns, and threw 14 interceptions. Although those numbers are subpar, he threw 26 touchdowns in his final year at UCLA and looked like a top prospect. He is versatile and sees the field well, which would go perfectly with Josh McDaniels’ offensive mind. Both McDaniels and Belichick would love to take a chance on a first-round talent who underperformed in his rookie season. Plus, aside from whether or not Rosen would become the quarterback of the future in New England, he would at least push Brady to excel. The resurgence of Brady really took place in 2014 when Jimmy Garoppolo was drafted, and he has not looked back since. Trading for Josh Rosen could help both now and for years down the road.
