As March approaches, the College Basketball season begins to heat up. For many, March Madness is the most entertaining time in the world of sports. With 68 different schools all thrown together to compete in a single-elimination tournament, it is evident how high the stakes are. The question is, what teams at this stage appear to have a true chance at winning the National Championship?
The obvious pick would be the Duke Blue Devils, who has arguably the two best players in the country in Zion Williamson and R.J. Barrett. They have only lost two games all year long and have dominated the vast majority of the teams they have played. Williamson truly is a freak of nature; his athleticism has exceeded expectations as he has taken his game to the next level. Barrett on the other hand has been the primary ball handler and can do a little bit of everything. In their previous matchup against North Carolina State, he recorded only the second triple double by a Duke player under Coach K. They were the preseason favorite to go all the way, and frankly not much has changed as we now head towards the postseason.
Much like Duke, another team that is always in the mix is the Kentucky Wildcats. Early on they did not necessarily look like they were going to have a great season by their own high standards, but the Wildcats have come together as of late. They recently had a huge game against the number one ranked Tennessee Volunteers, and completely dominated right from the tip-off. They now sit at 21–4 and are ranked fourth in the country. Led by head coach John Calipari, Kentucky will be as prepared for the tournament as any other team in the nation. They do not really have any single stand out player, but a collection of good, young guys who play great together. While Duke has been the favorite all year and has shown no signs of slowing down, Kentucky is my pick to win it all when it is all said and done.
Although Kentucky and Duke look great, there are plenty of other teams that have a great shot at making a run in March. The Gonzaga Bulldogs and Virginia Cavaliers are two teams that are in the mix year in and year out, and this season is no different. Gonzaga’s all around team plays great together on the offensive side of the ball, while Virginia has what is probably the best defense in college basketball. The Michigan Wolverines and North Carolina Tar Heels are both in the top 10 and will have opportunities to make some noise, but I do not see either one being able to survive the entire tournament. The team that is not seeming to get enough attention is Nevada Wolf Pack. They gained some valuable experience last year when they beat the Texas Longhorns in overtime in the first round. This year, they have only lost one game and it was all the way back on Jan. 5. Nevada is currently ranked sixth and will have a chance to move up even higher if they win their conference. Regardless of how it all works out, March Madness is going to be special, just as it is every year.
