Glow Boston hosted it’s Halloween event, Día de Los Muertos, (or Day of the Dead in English), on Thursday, Oct. 25th. It was held at The Middle East Nightclub in Cambridge, and it was an 18+ event, with a 21+ bar. The event ran from 10 p.m. until 1 a.m. and had dancers, a $100 costume contest and face painting available for everyone. There was a photo booth and free glowing necklaces for those who came in a costume. There were four DJ’s that played the event: Xandor, Flyy Home, DJZ, and PotsNPans. Each played EDM remixes of well known pop songs from the last few years.
College students filled the room with creative costumes and exciting energy. It was a sold out show, and the crowd was lively, with an eager line out of the door for almost an hour after the doors opened, as there was a constant flow of people going inside. Something I noticed was that the playlist varied with each DJ which made it difficult to establish a vibe. Each DJ was on for roughly under an hour, so they were rotating fairly quick. Sometimes throwback tunes were played, and other times Drake or Halsey would be played. However, no matter what they played, the crowd sang along. There were people dancing on top of the unused bar and on top of the benches to sit on, everyone was enjoying themselves. This event was much smaller than their fall festival hosted at the House of Blues but it was a successful night nonetheless. Groups of friends gathered together and sang along to their favorite songs and danced the night away. They had two dancers come onto the stage at various times with their whole faces painted with Day of the Dead makeup which also kept the crowd’s energy alive. They had giant platform heels and huge colorful flower crowns on top of their heads, they fit the theme perfectly.
The costume contest started with five contestants: a pimp, a white claw, a pope, Mario/Luigi, and Marshmallow (the artist). The crowd cheered for who they thought should win and ultimately gave it to the white claw girl! It was a creative, funny costume and a great idea on Glow Boston’s behalf to host a contest, creating the incentive to dress up. Each person who was on the stage being judged for their costumes told the crowd what college they went to. There were students from UMass Boston, Suffolk and Boston University, so there was a great mix of people from each university around the Boston area.
I would suggest going to one of these events held by Glow Boston at least once, and to go with a group of friends. You’ll really only enjoy yourself if you have people you feel comfortable with to go along with. Plus, the more the merrier and having a group of people always makes things more interesting and gives you more to do. Since we’re in Boston and there’s currently only one 18+ club that’s open, it can be difficult to find nightlife as a student who is under 21. Though $20 sounds like a lot of money to spend for one night out, you can have the opportunity to do so when it normally wouldn’t be given to you as someone under 21 in the city.
