Men’s Soccer: The UMass Boston men’s soccer team has got off to a hot start here in the 2019 season. They have a record of 2-1-1, but in all honesty, easily could be 4-0. They kicked off the year with a hard fought battle against MIT, a game that went into double overtime. They went into halftime with a tied score of 1-1, and then regulation ended with the game tied 2-2. Through two full overtimes, neither MIT nor the Beacons could put the ball in the net, resulting in a draw. UMass Boston quickly rebounded, defeating Wentworth Institute of Technology 2-0 in their second game of the season. They then traveled to Worcester to take on WPI, who handed the Beacons their only loss. With that said, it was scoreless through regulation, WPI scored in overtime to earn their 1-0 victory. Once again, the Beacons responded in their next game with a 7-1 win against Emerson College. Junior Nilton de Andrade leads the team with 12 points and four goals. Senior Nick Fontana has seven points to go along with three goals of his own. While the season is still young, it sure looks like a promising one for the Beacons.
Women’s Soccer: After starting their 2019 season with a 2-0 loss to Smith College, the UMass Boston women’s soccer team struck back with a three-game winning streak. In this three-game stretch, the Beacons only gave up one goal, while shutting two teams out. UMass Boston defeated Wentworth 2-0, Coast Guard Academy 2-1, and then Simmons College 3-0. In their latest game, they fell to Babson College in a 2-0 loss. That brings them to a 3-2 record that they will certainly look to improve upon. Regardless, it has been a solid start to the year and you should expect it to get even better. The scoring has been spread out, but sophomore Grace McGettrick leads the team with seven points and three goals. 
Volleyball: For the first time in a few seasons, UMass Boston’s volleyball team has got off to a slow start as they are really struggling. The Beacons won their first match of the season 3-0 against New England College. Since then, they have lost six straight matches and have been unable to put enough together to come away with a win. Although it has not been an ideal start, there is ample time for the Beacons to turn it around and string together some wins. This week they have three matches, all of which are winnable. On Tuesday they will host Salve Regina University at 7 p.m., Friday they will once again play host to Castleton University, and then on Saturday they will take on both St. Lawrence University and Rivier University in Nashua, New Hampshire.
