Referendum Question #1 (voted on by undergraduate students)
Referendum Question 1 (Action): Calling for the Undergraduate Student Body to support the decrease of the $9 waivable MASSPIRG fee on the student bill per semester to a $4 waivable fee per semester due to the glaring partisanship evident in the organization, which has historically used the funds to advocate for one political agenda. Additionally, this waivable fee takes advantage of student’s ignorance about their student bills. Public university funds, especially those paid through student bills should instead be championing for programs such as free academic tutoring, career services, and other programs that benefit the entire student body. A yes vote on this question will continue the MASSPIRG chapter at UMass Boston, and funded through a four dollar ($4) per student, per semester, waivable fee that appears on your tuition bill. A no vote on this question will continue the MASSPIRG chapter at UMass Boston, to be funded through a nine dollar ($9) per student, per semester, waivable fee that appears on your tuition bill.
No 71 percent - Winner
Yes 29 percent
Referendum Question #2 (voted on by undergraduate and graduate students) Referendum Question 1 (Action): MASSPIRG is a statewide, student-directed, non-partisan, organization. For almost 50 years, we’ve worked to mobilize students on campus to do research, advocacy, education, and service on a variety of issues including environmental protection, public health, youth voter mobilization, affordable higher education, and poverty relief efforts. MASSPIRG chapters across the state pool resources and hire a staff of professionals to work with students on issues that concern us as members of the community. Do you support the continued existence of the MASSPIRG chapter at UMass Boston funded through a $9 per-student per-semester waivable fee? Any student choosing not to support MASSPIRG may waive the fee. If you vote yes: A yes vote on this question will continue the MASSPIRG chapter at UMass Boston, to be funded through a nine dollar ($9) per student, per semester, waivable fee that appears on your tuition bill. If you vote no: A no vote on this question will remove the MASSPIRG chapter at UMass Boston, effective at the end of the 2020-2021 school year.
