Volunteering while in college is one of the best ways to give back to your community. As a college student, it gives you a chance to acquire new skills while sharing your knowledge at the same time. The importance of volunteering is to help others without being paid or required to do so. It demonstrates your compassion, willingness to help, interests and passion for your future employers.
Although this should not be your sole motive, volunteering is a great boost to your resume and adds some variety. As a volunteer, you can help make a difference in your community through your service. In high school, I was part of the National Honors Society, in which we worked in a team to create our service project. My team and I chose to volunteer at a local daycare. We planned activities that would help children learn about national holidays in the U.S. and develop numeracy, problem-solving and creative thinking skills. Our goal was to help children learn skills that may not be emphasized in our local community but are needed for primary school.
Volunteering can shape your personality. Through volunteering, you can make friends. It’s a way to show your talent and get involved. You can become a volunteer for a certain cause and show your support for the community at the same time. For example, there are volunteer groups for charities, to bring awareness to a disease. As good citizens, we all have a responsibility to make our community a better place. It gives you a sense of self-satisfaction knowing that the help you are providing is making a big difference in people’s lives. There are many volunteer opportunities available to college students in local charities, hospitals, schools, offices, libraries and more. In the past, I’ve been a volunteer at a local library near my home. My main duties were to organize books on the shelves, supervise the area and assist students and adults in locating books. Through that volunteer position, I’ve learned a lot of new skills including oral communication, social and organizational skills, time management and many more. Volunteering can change your life. You can make meaningful connections as a volunteer and bring people together for a cause.
One of the most important things I’ve gained from my volunteer position is confidence. It’s the key when it comes to any role. The skills you develop through volunteering can be transferred over to any job. Volunteering is good for your mental health. By spreading kindness through volunteering, you’re more likely to feel happier, rather than stressed. UMass Boston’s Career Services Office has many volunteering and community service opportunities that can be focused on your career goals. These opportunities are also connected to the Federal Work Study program which is a great opportunity for students to get work experience. By volunteering, you can expand your network through socializing and sharing your experiences with others as well.
Volunteering can be fun! You can use your creativity and interests towards a project of your choice. It’s a great way to share your ideas. It can be something you’re passionate about or any issues within the community that you want to resolve. We are all aware that college students are very busy and often work, alongside being full-time students. However, as a college student, you should volunteer as much as you can! Volunteering will allow you to make a difference in other’s lives as well as your own.
