You’re getting close to graduating, and you want to get some experience through an internship. You may be asking, “how do I find an internship?” UMass Boston has many great opportunities for students, ranging from part-time positions and work-study jobs to co-ops and internship programs.
Internships are a great way to get educational and professional experience for your career path. Moreover, if you’re looking for a way to pay for your tuition while gaining work experience, UMass Boston offers work-study and on-campus job opportunities. I would suggest applying for internships and/or jobs on career websites like Handshake and LinkedIn.
Handshake offers the “quick apply” option to submit documents including your resume, cover letter, and transcript with one click. It’s a quick and easy option for busy college students who are pursuing their full-time degrees. UMass Boston’s PACE Apprenticeship Program allows students to gain professional experience through on-campus work. Through PACE, students can explore different career paths as an apprentice with guidance from their supervisors.
UMBeInvolved, UMass Boston’s website for student clubs and events, has different career workshops for resume building and cover letters which are very informative and helpful. I would encourage everyone at UMass Boston to attend these workshops and book one-on-one appointments with career advisors on Handshake as well.
Stand out! Employers are reading through hundreds of applications each week; they are expecting more than just the basic candidate application. Your resume and cover letter should promote yourself and what you’re passionate about. The Office of Career Services and Internships offers advising sessions with appointments and is located on the first floor of the Campus Center. I would encourage you to book an appointment with a career advisor early on to ensure you are prepared to apply for jobs, internships, co-ops, etc.
It’s a good idea to apply for internships that you match the preferences for as you will have higher chances of receiving an interview and moving forward in the hiring process. I would highly suggest filling out the ‘My Journey’ section on your profile with something meaningful that conveys your story to potential employers. You might want to include your interests, experience, or perhaps some of your future goals discussing why you chose your field of study.
On Handshake, under the ‘Job’ section you can actually search keywords on which specific career you would like an internship for. It makes it easier for you to find internships that are relevant to your future career, passion, and/or interests. It also gives you the option of choosing a location and whether you would like to work full-time or part-time. Choose what is best for you based on your availability. You can save jobs or internships to apply to later on if you come across some. Furthermore, I would encourage all students to join clubs and organizations early in college. This is your chance to get involved at UMass Boston and a great way to boost your resume.
LinkedIn is a professional career networking platform that students/job finders can use to search for jobs, internships, etc. One of the most important parts of LinkedIn includes making professional connections. Networking can be extremely helpful when it comes to securing an internship and even choosing a career. Chatting with alumni, career professionals, and students is a great way to gain valuable information that may be beneficial towards your career path. Career fairs are one of the best ways for students to find an internship! UMass Boston’s virtual career expo for Business, Accounting, and Finance is on Sept. 28 which is offering one-on-one meetings with recruiters. I would highly encourage all students to take a look at the list of companies that will be attending. Personally, I believe that this is one of the best ways to secure an internship as a college student at UMass Boston.
