Baseball: After a long off-season in which UMass Boston’s baseball team fell short of the National Championship, they are currently ranked 16th in the country to begin the year. They ended 2019 ranked fifth, but lost some talented seniors which could impact the Beacons early on. On opening day, they defeated Stevens Institute of Technology 6–5 in 10 innings. It was a late comeback, as they were down 5–3 in the home half of the eighth inning. A late rally with two runs and then one more in the tenth earned the Beacons the walk-off win. They took on Suffolk University in game two, and once again won in extras. It also finished in walk-off fashion and went 10 innings long. The Beacons are now 2–1, after losing to MIT in their most recent game. All three matchups have been close, so hopefully going forward UMass Boston will score runs early and often. This week, the Beacons will take on Framingham State University today at 3 p.m, and will then head down to Florida for the week. Thursday, they will play Penn State-Abington at 3 p.m., and then they will take on Wheaton College on Friday at 4:30 p.m., followed by Ramapo College on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., and will then finish off the week on Sunday with a 2 p.m. game against the College of New Jersey.
Men’s Basketball: After a really good season in which UMass Boston’s men’s basketball team went 16–11, their season came to an end after an 88–73 loss to Western Connecticut State University in the Little East Conference semifinals. The Beacons had hosted Rhode Island College in the quarterfinals and won 89–82. UMass Boston was the four seed in the tournament, but lost to top-seeded Western Connecticut State. The Beacons are losing some seniors in 2020, but still expect them to be competitive next season.
Women’s Basketball: Much like the men’s team, UMass Boston’s women’s basketball team saw their season come to an end with a loss in the LEC semifinals. They had hosted UMass Dartmouth in the quarterfinals and handedly won 69–50. However, they were overmatched by Eastern Connecticut State University’s strong defense, as they lost 57–48 in the semifinals. The Beacons ended the season with an impressive 20–7 record and had earned the four seed in the tournament.
Lacrosse: UMass Boston’s lacrosse team could literally not have started their season any better, as they are currently a perfect 4–0. The Beacons have defeated Husson University 26–6, New England College 22–8, Emmanuel College 26–13, and Maine Maritime Academy 22–3. Their high powered offense has been firing on all cylinders and is looking to keep it up going forward. Originally, the Beacons were scheduled to travel to Texas to take on Southwestern University on Thursday, but the game got canceled. They will now have this week and spring break week off, which will give them time to get even better than they are already playing. When they return to action, they will host Keene State College at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 21.
