The New England Patriots took on the Kansas City Chiefs in week six of the NFL season on Sunday Night Football. They were playing up against game two of the American League Championship Series, which featured the Boston Red Sox and the Houston Astros. This had Boston fans torn between which game they would watch, and had many flipping back and forth. The Patriots took a comfortable 24–9 lead as they entered halftime, which made many fans switch back to the Red Sox. While the Red Sox game was tight, the Chiefs started to make a comeback and made things very interesting.
The Chiefs’s quarterback, Pat Mahomes, has caught the attention of just about everyone around the NFL through the first quarter of the season. He has been a scoring machine, and has been throwing the ball all over the field in each of his games. After starting off a little bit shaky, Mahomes began to find himself in the second half against New England. In the third quarter, the Chiefs outscored the Patriots 17–3, which made the score of the game 27–26 in the Patriots’s favor entering the fourth. After finally taking a 33–30 lead, the Chiefs seemed to be feeling pretty good and gaining momentum.
The Patriots quickly drove 71 yards down the field to the four-yard-line, thanks in large part to a long catch made by Chris Hogan. On third and goal, Tom Brady could not find anyone open, so he made the bold decision to take matters into his own hands. He ran into the end zone and took a big hit, but ultimately scored the touchdown. Following a field goal that gave the Patriots a 40–33 advantage, Pat Mahomes once again had an answer. On first down, Mahomes threw a 75-yard missile to speedy Tyreek Hill for a game-tying touchdown pass. Of course this did not phase Brady, who quickly threw a 39-yard pass to Rob Gronkowski which put the Patriots in field-goal range. The Red Sox had just won their game, so now all fans were able to focus on the Patriots. Sure enough, they ran down the clock, and Stephen Gostkowski nailed a 28-yard field goal as time expired to secure the 43–40 victory.
Although the Chiefs put up a ton of points, there was one very positive take away for the Patriots’s defense. Dont’a Hightower, who has received a lot of criticism for his play early on in the year, was terrific in this game. He deflected a pass, had two tackles, but most importantly had a 27-yard interception off of Mahomes. As good as a stat line as he posted, it was even better just to see him locked in and engaged. Hightower finally looked himself and came up big for the Patriots, as he has time and time again.
After the Patriots’s starting the year with a 1–2 record following bad losses to the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Detroit Lions, many people questioned if the dynasty was still going to last. Some said it was all coming to an end, others said the Patriots would be good but just not the same. Well, after handing the formerly 5–0 Chiefs their first loss, the Patriots now sit at 4–2. Many said the Jaguars were better than the Patriots, but now they are 3–3 and are one game back. It is a long season and a lot can change, but one thing that is for sure: the New England Patriots are not going anywhere anytime soon.
