Skin care myths can mess up someone’s routine, causing them to possibly break out more in the long run. It’s important to not get all of your information from YouTube, and to fact check before you adjust your beauty routine based on these videos or articles you may come across. Here are some ‘facts’ that are actually myths!
1. Junk food causes breakouts
There is actually no proven evidence that there is a correlation between these two. Of course, these foods may be bad for your health, though it doesn’t necessarily mean you will break out because of this. However, dairy products can cause a break out. So, avoid that greasy burger you’re eyeing—or indulge in it, but don’t blame your new pimple on it!
2. Exfoliating every day will improve your skin
Over-exfoliating can irritate the skin, causing it to do the opposite of what you may have been initially going for. It is good for your skin, but it is better if you do it in smaller increments. Overdoing it can cause damage and leave your skin feeling sensitive and raw, because it removes protective layers off that your skin needs. Most dermatologists suggest exfoliating three times a week, but if you know your skin is sensitive, it may be best to keep it below that number… just to be safe.
3. Toothpaste will cure breakouts
Toothpaste may actually agitate the breakout enough to get rid of it but it is harmful and will irritate your skin, which may cause your breakout to become irritated as well. There are much better solutions than using something that is meant to clean your teeth. Instead, try an overnight spot patch for random small breakouts you may encounter; they are inexpensive (typically under $10) and made specifically for this issue!
Here are some skin care tips that actually are proven to improve your skin’s overall well-being.
1. Use sunscreen
Even when it’s a cloudy day, it is still important to remember to apply sunscreen daily. By using sunscreen, you’re avoiding damage to the skin, which ultimately cause wrinkles to become more susceptible to form. Even using makeup with SPF in it sometimes does not do the trick. So it’s better to be safe now than sorry later. Add a bit of sunscreen to the beginning of your beauty routine to stay looking young and beautiful—for as long as possible.
2. Take your makeup off daily
Your pores will become clogged if you fall asleep before removing your makeup. Sometimes it’s easier to remove your makeup when you first walk in the door, so you do not become too tired or lazy as you’re about to fall asleep. By removing your makeup, you are giving your skin a clean slate to begin on. Your pores will thank you later.
3. Cleanse in a circular motion
When washing your face, a simple trick is to go UP in a circular motion. By doing this, you’re allowing your skin to breathe, and diminishing any dirt that may be lingering from your busy day. Your eyes will feel less puffy in the morning after doing this, and you don’t have to splurge on any special kind of brush either. Just use your hands to keep a gentle motion in place; that way, you don’t accidentally harm your skin or rip any protective layers.
