Nirvana fans celebrated the 20-year anniversary of “Nevermind” last week, and new merchandise was released to commemorate the occasion. A performance by the grunge gods was released in remembrance of the breakthrough album.
A previously unseen concert from the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, recorded Halloween night 1991. The show is the only HD video ever recorded of Nirvana. Clips of the concert have been used before now, but the full performance had never been seen before it debuted on VH1 Sept. 23. The DVD was released Sept. 27.
“Live At The Paramount” portrays the band at a very unique time. It had been a month after “Nevermind” was released and it had only just started to catch on. A result is a glimpse at pre-fame Nirvana and their shocking and dangerous stage antics, but with songs that are classics and easily recognizable. Hits like “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Lithium” are peppered in with deep cuts and covers like “Blew” and “Jesus Doesn’t Want Me For A Sunbeam.”
The cinematographers made great use of silhouettes against the solid colored backdrop to portray the band as very mysterious, which they were at the time. There is very little talking throughout the performance; Kurt Cobain only speaks into the microphone twice. The film focuses completely on the music and the performance, which is exactly what the fans wanted.
For any Nirvana fan, or music fan for that matter, “Live At The Paramount” needs to be in your collection. It is perhaps the best video we have of a short lived band that wasn’t filmed very often, let alone in HD. It’s definitely a solid choice. From ”
